Pit Viper is a vehicle introduced in Twisted Metal (1995). Pit Viper is a dune buggy, balanced in armor and speed. Although slightly lacking in Handling, its special attack, a ball of acid, is capable of inflicting heavy damage.

Twisted Metal (1995)[]

"Tough and sturdy, the Viper shoots a blob of acid that can melt most opponents with a single hit."
—Twisted Metal - Pit Viper's Bio

Pit Viper debuted in Twisted Metal (1995), and hasn't appeared again since.

Twisted Metal: Head-On[]

The Grasshopper car from Twisted Metal: Head-On was originally called "Pit Viper". This can be seen in an early build when the game was still known as Twisted Metal: Rage.

Special Weapons

  • Leap n' Slam: Pit Viper jumps from the ground and smashes the targeted enemy. A green rectangle locked below the target indicates that Pit Viper is ready to execute its Special Weapon. If successful, your target will be thrown far away.
  • Sizzling Leap n' Slam: When the Special is upgraded, press the fire button repeatedly and a few beams of acid hits your target before Pit Viper smashes into the enemy.

Twisted Metal: Harbor City[]

Pit Viper was planned to make a return in Twisted Metal: Harbor City with a drastically different design compared to its original appearance from Twisted Metal (1995). However, the game was cancelled and this incarnation of the vehicle never got used, even in later games.

The vehicle is very unfinished in the build it is found in, with no animations for its wheels or weapons. It also has no driver.

Special Weapon

  • Placeholder: A green missile similar to Spectre's special.

Twisted Metal (2012)[]

A model for Pit Viper was created for Twisted Metal (2012) for a possible DLC, but went unused. There are no known screenshots of it.

Trivia[]

  • Pit Viper is the only vehicle in Twisted Metal (1995) not to reappear in any other Twisted Metal game.
  • Pit Viper's license plate (GN4HYR) means "Gun For Hire".
  • Even though Grasshopper replaces Pit Viper in Twisted Metal 2, it can be seen that it was, in fact, once considered for a return in Twisted Metal 2. Pit Viper's Acid Spit animations exist, complete, in Grasshopper's texture file, but are unused (Can be seen by texture swapping Grasshopper's with another vehicle). To further prove this theory, Grasshopper's files in the PC port are, respectively, initialed "PV".
  • Grasshopper's upgraded special in Twisted Metal: Head-On, which involves tapping the fire button to shoot beams of acid whilst airborne, may be a nod to Pit Viper.
  • Furthermore, in an early build of Head-On when the game was still known as Twisted Metal: Rage, the Grasshopper car was named "Pit Viper".
  • On page nine of the art booklet included with the Extra Twisted Edition of Twisted Metal: Head-On, a render of a complete Pit Viper with a model different to that of the modern Grasshopper can be seen. This model is the same one that can be found in a leaked build of the cancelled Twisted Metal: Harbor City from 2005.
  • According to David Jaffe, a model for Pit Viper was created for Twisted Metal (2012) as a possible DLC, but went unused.[1]
