Warthog is a recurring vehicle in the Twisted Metal series, and is one of the thirteen original vehicles. Warthog has always had strong armor and poor speed in almost all installments of the Twisted Metal series.

The drivers of Warthog have been mostly those who have served or are affiliated with the armed forces through most of the Twisted Metal franchise except in Twisted Metal: Black.

In most appearances, Warthog is depicted as a US Army Humvee, however in Twisted Metal 4, Black, Small Brawl and the 2012 game, Warthog is depicted as a tank (TM4), a station wagon strapped on top of a tank chassis (Black and the 2012 game) and a dune buggy (TM:SB).

Twisted Metal (1995)[]

"Slower than most of this year's competitors, but with a mean special weapon and a ton of armor, it doesn't need to be fast."
—Twisted Metal - Warthog's Bio

Warthog makes its debut in Twisted Metal, the first game in the series. It's a vehicle that is great for newcomers for its consistency.

Special Weapon

  • XQJ-37 Hornets: Nail an enemy with all 3 of these homing missiles for some major damage!

Twisted Metal 2[]

Warthog returns in Twisted Metal 2, this time with a four wheeled vehicle instead of a six wheeled one.

Special Weapon

  • Patriot Missiles: A cluster of powerful missiles that home in on the nearest enemy. The longer the missiles are in the air, the more powerful they become. However, if you are too far away from a target the missiles will harmlessly crash into the environment.

Twisted Metal III[]

"He drives a heavily armored vehicle."
—Twisted Metal III - Instruction Manual

Warthog returns in Twisted Metal III, with the same driver as the previous game.

Special Weapon

  • Patriot Missiles: Three missiles that swarm their target like killer bees.

Twisted Metal 4[]

"His tank is a marvel of 80-year-old military technology. Though slow, it can take unreal punishment. Its modernized ion blaster can blow holes through any vehicle the enemy forces have."
—Twisted Metal 4 - Instruction Manual

Gen. Warthog is a vehicle from Twisted Metal 4. Its name is obviously inspired by Warthog from previous entries, but the vehicle itself seems to be named "Trojan" according to its ending cutscene.

Special Weapon

  • Ion Pad: Gen. Warthog plants a marker/target which initializes an ion satellite and later activates a powerful ion blast.

Twisted Metal: Black[]

Twisted Metal: Black was the first time in the series where Warthog's driver wasn't in the military. The vehicle is a tank chassis with the body of a station wagon chained on top, rather than a Humvee or a WWI tank.

Special Weapon

  • Flamethrower: Once you have an enemy in your sights, press the Fire button to release a huge stream of flames from Warthog's cannon. Most effective while being aimed directly towards a single opponent; it can also be used to engulf a large group of opponents in fire. When an opponent is on fire from being hit with this weapon, their turbo gauge drains at a faster rate than normal.

How to Unlock
Select the Suburbs as the second level in Story Mode and drive up to the carnival. Turn left, and you'll see a Gas Can pickup on the top of a small hill, which you can jump off of. Go at it with high speed, but don't go too fast or too slow. Once you land on the roof of the building, destroy the roof vent/chimney near you to make a hole that leads to the inside of the building. Drop down into it and you'll find a blocked off corner with a control panel waiting to be destroyed. Warthog will be unlocked upon doing so.

Twisted Metal: Small Brawl[]

"Warthog fires off a barrage of 3 red, white and blue homing missiles."
—Twisted Metal: Small Brawl - Instruction Manual

This incarnation of Warthog is nontraditional, as his acceleration, speed, and handling are juiced up. However, his armor was lowered heavily.

Special Weapon

  • Patriot Missiles: Special involves 3 missiles with red, white and blue trails that lock onto the closest player.

Twisted Metal: Head-On[]

Warthog is driven by Colonel Hall who wants to have an ultimate weapon to kill all the evil-doers in the world. It is once again a Humvee.

Special Weapons

  • Patriot Missiles: Fires a set of three red, white, and blue missiles at opponents.
  • Mega Patriot Missiles: After receiving the Special Weapon upgrade, it's possible to charge up the special. Charging it all the way and letting go of the button will make the missiles larger, dealing more damage on impact.

Twisted Metal: Lost[]

Warthog reappeared in Twisted Metal: Lost, looking the same as it did in Twisted Metal: Black.

Special Weapon

  • Flamethrower: Same as in Black.

Twisted Metal (2012)[]

Warthog is a returning vehicle in Twisted Metal (2012) and is nearly identical, in regards to appearance, to the one from Twisted Metal: Black. It has the second most hit points in Twisted Metal (2012), with 300 HP, behind Juggernaut with 750 HP, and ahead of Darkside with 280 HP.

It is unlocked by attaining a gold medal in every event in the Story Mode on the Twisted difficulty (the hardest difficulty). This unlocks the vehicle for use in both single player and multiplayer.

Special Weapons

  • Super Crush (60-100 pts): Its primary special attack, "Super Crush", lets you lift up on the rear of your treads and allows you to drive over opponents, literally crushing them.
  • Shockwave (30 pts): The secondary special "Shock Wave" also lifts up on the rear of your treads as you charge up the fire button (R2) and slams on the ground, sending out a frontal-cone shockwave that knocks back enemies caught in the blast radius.

Unused Entries[]

Twisted Metal: Harbor City[]

Warthog was planned to make a return in Twisted Metal: Harbor City. However it never had a proper design, with the model in the most recent available build only being a simplistic green car with the text "WART" all over it.

The Black version of Warthog also exists in the files of the game, although it's more likely that it was a leftover rather than what Warthog would end up being.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • Warthog is one of three vehicles to have been featured in all of the Twisted Metal games, the others being Mr. Grimm and Sweet Tooth.
    • Out of those three, Warthog is the only one to have its driver changed in almost every game.
  • Warthog is the third of the many vehicles who borrowed from Thumper's original flamethrower Special Weapon. The others include Firestarter, Drag Queen, Cousin Eddy, Kamikaze and Crimson Fury.
  • In TM(1995), Warthog's license plate reads "UESUVA," which is based on the phrase "U S of A," which is a variation on USA, the abbreviation of the United States of America. In TM2, its license plate reads "LUKETMYHED" (Look at my head), a foreshadowing to the vehicle's ending cutscene.
  • Warthog was scheduled to be in Twisted Metal: Harbor City, though its design and special weapon were never developed. For the beta test, it was a simple green vehicle with the word "WART" on it.

Twisted Metal (1995)[]

  • Warthog's license plate in the original game (UESUVA) means "U.S of A."
  • In an early version of the game, Warthog's name was separated as "Wart Hog".[1]

Twisted Metal 2[]

  • Warthog appears to have six wheels in the ending cut scene, the way Warthog in Twisted Metal does. However, the vehicle in the game has only 4 wheels.
  • Warthog's license plate in Twisted Metal 2 (LUKET MYHED) means "Look At My Head".

Twisted Metal 4[]

  • Melvin states that the vehicle's name is Trojan, and that the driver's name is "Warthog."
  • General Warthog is the second oldest known contestant in the Twisted Metal series at age 99, the third oldest being Granny Dread at age 97 and the first being Captain Rogers at age 105 in TM2 and 107 in TMIII.
  • General Warthog is the first out of the two Warthog drivers in the series to share the name of their vehicle with themselves; the second being Warthog in TM:SB.
  • General Warthog states that he hates computers and electronics in modern warfare, ironically, his Special is an electronic weapon.
  • Despite being 99 years old, General Warthog doesn't look a day over 60 years.

Twisted Metal: Black[]

  • This incarnation of Warthog has nothing to do with the other vehicles of the same name. In an early build from a month before the game's release, this vehicle was named White Knight, meaning the name change to "Warthog" was very last minute.
    • The early design of Warthog was used for Outlaw instead.
  • In Twisted Metal: Black, during Warthog's ending cut scene when Warhawk explodes, you can see that the vehicle on the building below is Axel, not Warthog. This also applies to Yellow Jacket and Manslaughter.

Twisted Metal: Small Brawl[]

  • In an early version of Small Brawl dated September 27th 2001, there exists a car model for Grasshopper that was identical to Warthog. The reason for this was because Grasshopper got replaced by Warthog, due to the developers of the game not having the cinematics of Grasshopper ready in time, only the model for her vehicle. On the other hand, Warthog had cinematics ready but no vehicle model done.[2]
  • The original idea for Warthog's vehicle, before it reused Grasshopper's model, was that it was going to be an old World War 2 Sherman tank R/C.[3]
  • Warthog's special was reused from Spectre, but with changed visuals and parameters.[4]

Twisted Metal (2012)[]

  • The in-game selection screen in Twisted Metal (2012) lists Warthog's secondary special as "Mega Gun Turret", where in fact, the vehicle has no such special.
  • Warthog's license plate in this game (TRD-ON-U) means "Tread on You".
