Grasshopper is a recurring vehicle in the Twisted Metal series, characterized by low armor, good handling, average Special Weapon power and speed. Grasshopper has appeared in Twisted Metal 2 and Twisted Metal: Head-On, being driven by Krista Sparks in both appearances.

Its Special Weapon always involved Grasshopper jumping high into the air and landing on top of enemies, fitting its name.

Twisted Metal 2[]

Grasshopper makes its debut in Twisted Metal 2, being the spiritual successor to Pit Viper.

Special Weapon

  • Leap n' Slam: Difficult to avoid, Leap n' Slam allows the dune buggy to jump high in the air and land hard on top of an enemy. Be careful when executing this attack in enclosed spaces, because you can sustain damage by hitting obstacles like ceilings and bridges. Grasshopper can easily be taken out of its Special Weapon by a well aimed enemy attack.

Twisted Metal: Head-On[]

Grasshopper returns in Twisted Metal: Head-On.

Special Weapons

  • Leap n' Slam: Grasshopper jumps from the ground and smashes the targeted enemy. A green rectangle locked below the target indicates that Grasshopper is ready to execute its Special Weapon. If successful, your target will be thrown far away.
  • Sizzling Leap n' Slam: When the Special is upgraded, press the fire button repeatedly and a few beams of acid hits your target before Grasshopper smashes into the enemy.

Twisted Metal: Small Brawl[]

The car that was eventually chosen to be Warthog in Twisted Metal: Small Brawl was originally supposed to be Grasshopper. An early version of the game dated September 27th, 2001 present within the final game's files includes a model of Grasshopper, being identical to Warthog's.

It's possible to rename Grasshopper's model into Warthog's and replace it via file editing. There are only two minor differences: Grasshopper doesn't have the ice models that appear around the cars when frozen, and Warthog's special is missing its missile models, only leaving the trails when fired.

Special Weapon

  • Concept Special: Although not implemented, the original idea for Grasshopper's special had her jump on top of an enemy up and down while two turrets shoot the car below. At the end of the special she would hop off, dropping the turrets as if they were remote bombs, blowing up the enemy she just jumped out off.[1]

Twisted Metal: Harbor City[]

Grasshopper was planned to make a return in Twisted Metal: Harbor City, however it never received a proper model.

The model present in all available builds of the game is of a very simplistic green car with the text "GRASS" written all over it. It's unknown if a model was ever created for it.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • Grasshopper, Mr. Slam and Spectre are the only vehicles in the Twisted Metal series that have been piloted by ghosts.
  • Grasshopper is one of the only recurring vehicles in the Twisted Metal series to have the same Special Weapon in all of its appearances, along with Spectre and Twister.
  • Grasshopper was scheduled to be in Twisted Metal: Harbor City, but its design and special weapon were never finished. During the beta test, the vehicle was nothing but a green car with the word "GRASS" on it.

Twisted Metal 2[]

  • It should be noted that Pit Viper was replaced by Grasshopper in Twisted Metal 2. This can be justified by hacking Grasshopper's texture file. Pit Viper's Acid Spit sprites still exist in the file, and are complete, but are unused. However, it is possible to see this in-game on the PC port by texture swapping Grasshopper with certain characters (Axel is confirmed.) Because of this, it can be said Pit Viper was originally going to appear, but was taken out sometime in development. To further prove this theory, Grasshopper's files in the PC port are, respectively, initialed "PV".

Twisted Metal: Small Brawl[]

  • In an early version of Twisted Metal: Small Brawl dated September 27th, 2001, there exists a car model for Grasshopper that was identical to Warthog.
    • That's because Grasshopper got replaced by Warthog, the reason being that the developers of the game didn't have the cinematics of Grasshopper ready in time, and only had her vehicle. On the other hand, Warthog had cinematics but no vehicle.[2]

Twisted Metal: Head-On[]

  • Grasshopper's upgraded special in Head-On, which involves tapping the fire button to shoot beams of acid whilst airborne may be a shout-out to Pit Viper, a vehicle with a similar appearance from the original Twisted Metal.
  • In an early version of Twisted Metal: Head-On dated November 1st, 2004, when the game still was known as "Rage", Grasshopper was named Pit Viper.
